Edinburg, Texas (April 23, 2022) – A heartbreaker went against Republic FC on Saturday night, as a stoppage-time score from Rio Grande Valley FC issued Sacramento their second loss of the season at H-E-B Park.
On a windswept night, a tough turnover in stoppage time sealed the loss for the Boys in Old Glory Red. The Toros’ Dylan Borczak seized the opportunity on the counter in the 92nd minute, erasing what looked to be a point solidified after Sacramento equalized late.
Despite a slow first half, Sacramento did well to hold possession and keep control. An early chance nearly put the club ahead in just the 5th, minute, but Luther Archimede was unable to put a cross from Emil Cuello on frame. Archimede came close to netting another with his head in just after the half-hour mark, but his attempt off a Damia Viader cross went just high.
Contributions from across the roster provided some relief for the club to close the week’s taxing stretch. After the Toros opened the scoring in the 61st minute, Conor Donovan – making his first start in league play this season, netted the equalizer for Sacramento ten minutes later.
Republic FC’s defensive unit – featuring Ferrety Sousa and Conor Donovan in place of Dan Casey and Jack Gurr – did well to keep the Toros from threatening. In total, Sacramento’s backs took possession from the hosts 21 times and allowed just eight shots.
Donovan’s score – their first off a set piece in league play this season – looked to be all that was needed to take a point on the road before Borczak’s late score ended Sacramento’s streak of four matches in league play without a loss.
After the final match of their three-in-seven-day stretch, the Indomitable Club returns home and will get in a full week of training before they welcome Las Vegas Lights FC to Heart Health Park on April 30. Tickets for the contest are available at SacRepublicFC.com/single-match-tickets, and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com, and the FOX40 News mobile app, and streaming on ESPN+.
