Earlier today, the USL Championship announced that Republic FC’s Damia Viader’s 10th minute score on June 11 vs. Detroit City FC was voted Fan’s Choice Goal of the Week for Week 14.
Just ten minutes after the opening whistle, Viader took possession of an errant clearance from Detroit’s back line. With no man pressing him and plenty of space to work with, the Spaniard pushed forward into the attacking third before unleashing a powerful rocket from distance, catching Detroit goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher by surprise and finding the back of the net. The score was his second of the season, and went down as the eventual game winner after Republic FC’s backline logged the club’s second straight clean sheet win.
Viader’s win in the weekly poll marks the first time a Republic FC player has taken home Goal of the Week honors this season. The club’s players won the honor four times in 2021, with two wins coming from midfielder Luis Felipe, whose Week 24 strike won the October Goal of the Month poll and was nominated for USL Championship Goal of the Year.
