The United Soccer League released the 2016 USL All-League Teams on Tuesday, recognizing the top performers throughout the league from the 2016 USL Regular Season. Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Danny Barrera earned First Team honors while forward Cameron Iwasa was named to the Second Team.
The 2016 USL All-League Team was voted on by team management and a league-wide media panel that included representation from every USL market.
Midfielder Danny Barrera was a crucial offensive player for Republic FC, tallying nine assists and three goals in USL regular season play. He finished second in the USL in assists this season, just one assist behind Portland Timbers 2's Villyan Bijev.
Barrera led Republic FC in minutes this season, recording 2,558 across 30 matches. He also overtook defender Emrah Klimenta in all-time consecutive USL appearances this season, appearing in all 30 matches in 2016 and appearing in every USL match dating back to June 6, 2015, a total of 46 consecutive matches.
Barrera set a new club record for Republic FC for most assists in a season, breaking the previous record of eight set by Rodrigo Lopez in 2014. From June 18, 2016 through July 10, 2016, Barrera also set a new club record for consecutive matches with an assist, recording six in five matches.
Barrera earned USL Team of the Week honors once this season in Week 16 after recording two assists in Republic FC’s 3-3 draw against Orange County Blues FC on July 10 before adding a goal and an assist in Republic FC’s 2-3 loss to Real Monarchs on July 6. He also earned Team of the Week Honorable Mention in Week 22.
Meanwhile, for his part, Iwasa led Republic FC in goals and points this season, recording 12 goals and three assists for a cumulative 27 points. His club-leading 12 goals also set a new club record for goals scored in a single season, breaking the record of 11 set by Thomas Stewart in 2014.
Iwasa, along with Barrera, appeared in all 30 of Republic FC’s regular season matches this season. After appearing as a substitute in Republic FC’s first three matches of the season, Iwasa started the remaining 27 matches, a new club record for consecutive USL starts, breaking the previous record of 24 set by Patrick McLain in 2015.
In addition, Iwasa set new club records for shots and shots and goal in a season, tallying 59 and 31 respectively.
Iwasa was named USL Player of the Week in Week 13 this season after scoring his first professional brace in a 3-2 victory over the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on June 18. In all, Iwasa earned Team of the Week honors three times this season and honorable mention twice.
