On Tuesday, the city of Sacramento—including Sacramento Republic FC—came together to celebrate the indomitable spirit of six-year-old Ethan, as Make-A-Wish® granted his wish to become a garbage man.
Ethan, who is from Rancho Cordova, has cystic fibrosis, an inherited disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system. When he made his wish, all of his wishes surrounded his dream of being a garbage man when he grows up.
Sacramento residents from across the city lined up to see Ethan as he went along his garbage route—in his very own uniform and garbage truck—in the morning through midtown and downtown Sacramento as part of his #EthanCleansUp Wish Reveal.
The route kicked off at Sacramento Bee and VSP Vision Care, before continuing up 21st Street and turning on to I Street and arriving at Sacramento Fire Department Station No. 2, where more of the community was on hand to cheer on Ethan as he cleaned up the streets of Sacramento.
In addition to meeting numerous firefighters at the station, Ethan—a soccer player—received another surprise: a gift from Republic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek.
“I was watching the news with my roommate and I saw Ethan and I wanted to go meet this kid,” said Jakubek. “So I myself was super excited to be a part of it.”
Jakubek surprised Ethan with his own Republic FC kit, emblazoned with his name across the back. Additionally, Ethan received a soccer ball and an invitation to a Republic FC match.
“To be in community events like this for Republic FC is always something I always want to do. We are people in the city that people look up to, and it’s important to show we care about the fans like [Ethan],” said Jakubek “Being a player on the team, you have the opportunity to give back. And it’s an awesome thing. I love it, I always want to do more.”
