What’s the latest on the team?
Republic FC (4-3-2, 14 pts) enter their second derby in four days after handing Fresno FC their first loss of the season on Wednesday night. Midfielder Sam Werner capitalized on a failed clearance from the Fresno keeper in the first half to volley a chipped shot over him and score the lone goal of the night.
Werner’s goal was his second of the season and helped snap a three-game winless streak for his side. The win was all the more significant as Republic FC’s leading goalscorer, Cameron Iwasa, was sidelined alongside Villyan Bijev due to injury.
How about the other guys?
Reno 1868 FC (3-2-4, 13 pts) arrive in Sacramento after drawing 2-2 at home to second-ranked Tulsa Roughnecks FC last Saturday. The Nevadan club’s offense is spearheaded by Brian Brown who leads the team with five goals and three assists this season.
Adding to the natural rivalry between the two sides, Reno’s roster features former Republic FC defender Emrah Klimenta who joined the club last month.
Head-to-Head
Only one point currently separates fourth-placed Sacramento and eighth-placed Reno in the Western Conference standings. Ian Russell’s side currently has the edge in the all-time, as Republic FC is currently 1-3-1 against Reno 1868 FC in league play.
- Overall: 1-3-1
- Home: 0-2-0
- Away: 1-1-1
One other note: The two sides will face each other again just four days later in the Second Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Republic FC has knocked out Reno from the tournament in the past two editions.
