Yesterday’s victory – led by Justin Sterk – has already guaranteed El Tri a trip to the top division next week but the better the boys in Old Glory Red finish in this week’s bracket, the more points they’ll accumulate towards the final tally at the end of the campaign which will determine the champion.

The midweek Quarterfinal win began with Raul Jimenez bagged his team-best seventh score of the tournament early in the first half. The Ivory Coast netted once before the break and again early in the second half to snag a 2-1 lead. Mexico managed to level just moments later by way of Rodolfo Pizarro, but the midfielder was only just getting started and scored a second goal just six minutes later.

The Ivory Coast equalized in the 77th minute and just as the game seemed like it was destined for extra time, the Wolverhampton Wanderers striker picked out Hirving Lozano in space and ‘Chucky’ buried his shot on the cusp of the 90th minute to seal the seven-goal thriller for Sterk and El Tri.

The Mexican attack will have to be firing on all cylinders for a second straight game if the team has any intention of advancing beyond a stacked Argentina-side, led by none other than Lionel Messi. In Argentina’s last match, the South American squad soared to a 5-1 win over Las Vegas Lights FC – playing as Uruguay – despite being outposted on the afternoon. Argentina – with Alexy Bosetti in charge – assaulted the Uruguayan goal with 15 total shots on the encounter.
Unfortunately for Diaz and El Tri on Thursday, Messi isn’t the only attacking threat the Indomitable Club needs to worry about. Joining arguably the greatest player in the world up top is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, Juventus playmaker Paulo Dybala and Inter Milan forward Lautaro Matinez. Each and every one of them has excelled on the grandest of soccer stages and if Mexico can limit their scoring chances, there’s a good chance Republic FC could make a second appearance in the Div-B Final during the eCup competition.
Supporters keeping tabs on the SRFC’s eCup matches have the opportunity to donate to club partner Raley’s Food for Families, the charity the Indomitable Club will be representing throughout the tournament.
