Phoenix, Ariz. – In a physical matchup on short rest, Republic FC fell to Phoenix Rising FC on the road on Wednesday night by a score of 1-2. Defender Shane Wiedt netted his first goal of the season as Rodrigo Lopez added his third assist and first since returning from injury.
After Sacramento held the hosts to a scoreless first half for the 20th time this season – the most by any club across the league – Phoenix netted two goals within five minutes to put the pressure on the team that handed the Arizona club a 4-0 loss just a month ago.
As Republic FC’s substitutes added new energy to the squad, the Indomitable Club cut Phoenix’s lead in half in the 84th minute as Rodrigo Lopez sent a perfectly-placed corner kick to Shane Wiedt on the back post for his first goal with Sacramento. The club continued to push Phoenix for the remainder of the game, but couldn’t find the equalizer as time ran out.
It’s a quick turnaround for Republic FC as the club heads back out on the road for its third game in eight days to face Norcal rival Oakland Roots SC on Saturday. Kickoff from Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, California is set for 7:00 p.m. and fans can watch the game in English and Spanish on FOX40, FOX40.com, the FOX40 News Mobile App, Antenna TV 40.2, and ESPN+. Sacramento plays next at home on September 16 when El Paso Locomotive FC visits Heart Health Park on Noche Latina powered by SMUD.
