Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 4, FC Anahuac 0

Sacramento Republic FC broke through in the 12th minute after dominating possession from the start. Midfielder Elliott Hord was able to find space on the right flank and send a low driven cross into the box for forward Harry Williams who got a flick touch onto the ball, sending it inside the far post and into the side netting for the opening goal.

Three minutes later, Hord would again link up with Williams on a very similar cross, which the forward was able to knock past FC Anahuac keeper Angel Octavio Alvarez and into the back of the net for Williams’ second goal of the match, putting Republic FC ahead 2-0.

FC Anahuac had a decent chance on goal in the 37th minute when forward Ismael Santana was able to beat Republic FC keeper Dominik Jakubek to a ball in the air. Santana chested the ball down and had to turn to face goal as he sent a shot right at Jakubek who was able to parry it away to a defender.

Republic FC forward Sammy Ochoa had a good look on goal in the 43rd minute as he blasted a right-footed shot on goal. Alvarez was in a good position to make the save and push the ball out of play. Republic FC would go into a halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Williams nearly had his hat trick goal in the 53rd minute, once again getting behind a cross from Hord, but Alvarez was able to make a key save again. Ochoa had a breakaway chance snuffed out by Alvarez just a few minutes later. Williams had two more chances to snatch his hat trick before he was substituted off for Wilson Kneeshaw.

Kneeshaw converted a penalty kick, an appropriate birthday gift to himself, in the 66th minute after he was clipped in the box by FC Anahuac defender Christian Esnal Fernandez. Kneeshaw calmly placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal, past a diving Alvarez, putting Republic FC ahead 3-0.

Second half substitute Daniel Trickett-Smith would score Republic FC’s fourth in the 85th minute when he drilled home a rocket, side-winding volley. Forward Trevin Caesar attacked up the left side and sent a shot on goal that was deflected straight up in to the air. Trickett-Smith was in perfect position to send his volley on net as he found the back of the net to give Republic FC a 4-0 lead, which they would carry to the final whistle.

Republic FC will host Reno 1868 FC on Wednesday, May 31, in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup. Location and kickoff TBD.

Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs FC Anahuac

Sacramento Republic FC enter the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, May 17, when they host FC Anahuac (UPSL) in a Second Round match at Papa Murphy’s Park. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT. Tickets to the match are still available at Ticketmaster.com.

This is the fourth straight season that Republic FC have participated in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. They have advanced past the Second Round in each of the previous three seasons and moved on to the Fourth Round twice, losing only once in the Third Round.

Overall, Republic FC are 5-1-0 in Second and Third Round matches combined, with a goal differential of 25-9. Republic FC have scored at least four goals in four of their six Second and Third Round matches. Republic FC are 3-0-0 in Second Round matches, outscoring their opponents 11-3.

In 2016, Republic FC coasted to a 5-0 victory over CD Aguiluchos USA (UPSL) in their Second Round U.S. Open Cup match on May 18. Republic FC defender Carlos Rodriguez, made his first professional start in the match and scored his first professional goal, a 44th minute header off a corner.

Defender Emrah Klimenta and forward Gabe Gissie have both had success for Republic FC in the U.S. Open Cup. Klimenta scored his first Republic FC goal in a Third Round match against the Fresno Fuego (PDL) on May 28, 2014. Gissie recorded two assists in a Third Round match on May 27, 2015. Coincidentally midfielder Agustin Cazarez, then playing for the Ventura County Fusion (PDL) recorded an assist on the Fusion’s only goal against Republic FC on May 14, 2014. Cazarez would later sign with Republic FC on Aug. 19, 2014.

FC Anahuac is a part of the United Premier Soccer League and is the first amateur team from the state of Nevada to enter the U.S. Open Cup in the modern era of the cup (1995-present). FC Anahuac was originally founded in 1966 by Pedro and Jose Pérez in Oxnard, Calif and were known as Guerreros de Anahuac. In 1991 they moved to Las Vegas, changing their name to FC Anahuac.

FC Anahuac advanced to the Second Round after defeating the Sonoma County Sol (NPSL) 5-4 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw in extra time. Prior to their match with the Sol, FC Anahuac had won their previous two qualifying matches by forfeit. In their first qualifying match, their opponents, the Las Vegas Mobsters, did not show up for the match and in their second qualifying match against MF 10, the opponent only fielded a team of eight players which was reduced to six after an injury and red card, causing a forfeit at halftime.

Sacramento, Calif., May 15, 2017 – Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg today joined with Kevin Nagle and Warren Smith to announce the formal acquisition of United Soccer League’s (USL) Sacramento Republic FC (Republic FC) by Sac Soccer & Entertainment Holdings, LLC (Sac Soccer). As Sac Soccer’s first step in leading Republic FC, Nagle announced the launch of the new #BringItHome initiative to guide the next phase in the club’s push for elevation to Major League Soccer (MLS).

“Sacramento is unified behind Republic FC, and our bid for MLS has no equal,” said Mayor Steinberg. “No community has worked longer or advanced further than Sacramento to demonstrate our readiness to be a Major League Soccer city. Our record-breaking fan base, shovel-ready stadium plan and committed ownership group are unrivaled. With a final decision on the next round of MLS expansion expected by December, it’s time for Sacramento to #BringItHome.”

While terms of the acquisition remain confidential, the deal achieves the fundamental goal of ensuring that Republic FC will be the official identity of Sacramento’s prospective MLS club.

Sacramento Republic FC to Host FC Anahuac in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Second Round Match at Papa Murphys Park

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 11, 2017) – Sacramento Republic FC will enter the 104th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when they host FC Anahuac (UPSL) in a Second Round Match on Wednesday, May 17 at Papa Murphy’s Park. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the match are still available on Ticketmaster.com.

Last year, Sacramento Republic FC advanced to the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup by defeating CD Aguiluchos USA (UPSL) 5-0 on May 18, 2016. Republic FC were eliminated from the tournament on June 1, 2016 when they fell 3-1 to the Kitsap Pumas (PDL).

FC Anahuac won their First Round match 5-4 on penalties after tying the Sonoma County Sol (NPSL) 1-1 in extra time. FC Anahuac are the 2016 Fall Season UPSL Champion, going 13-1-1 on the season. Originally founded in 1966, FC Anahuac is based in Las Vegas, Nev. and are the first amateur team from the state of Nevada to compete in the U.S. Open Cup since 1995.

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. Entering its 104th year of competition, this year’s U.S. Open Cup will feature a record 99 teams participating in the tiered-bracket and single-game knockout tournament. 18 USL, 6 NASL and 19 MLS teams join 56 lower division teams in the tournament.

The winning team of the U.S. Open Cup will receive a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League for the next season, have their name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy and receive a cash prize. FC Dallas (MLS) are the defending U.S. Open Cup champions.

Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 0, San Antonio FC 1

Republic FC started the match very strong, pressing San Antonio FC’s defense looking for a goal. They had their best chance on goal in just the 18th minute after forward Sammy Ochoa stole the ball in the attacking third earning himself a one-on-one situation with San Antonio FC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo. Ochoa looked to beat the keeper with a left footed shot, but Restrepo was there with a foot save. The ball did bounce back in a dangerous area and found the feet of forward Wilson Kneeshaw in front of goal, but defender Stephen McCarthy was there to make a sliding tackle to clear the ball from danger.

The best chance of the first half for San Antonio FC came late in stoppage time, which seemed to extend long past the one-minute allotted. Defender Ben Newnam stole the ball on the right side of the field and drove toward the touchline before sending in a high-arching cross. Newnam’s cross found the head of midfielder Rafa Castillo who sent a shot toward goal, but the ball went just over the bar keeping the match scoreless at the half.

Republic FC again came out strong to start the second half, earning two corners and a free kick in the first three minutes. Danny Barrera’s corner in the 48th minute found the head of Kneeshaw who sent the ball into the box where it was batted around before falling to the feet of midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith. The midfielder attempted a right-footed volley, but his shot sailed over the bar.

Republic FC would have another chance in the 61st minute off a throw-in from the right side. Barrera received the throw, turned to the middle before sending a cross into the box. Trickett-Smith found space in the middle of the box, leaping high in the air to connect with Barrera’s cross, and sending a shot toward the lower right corner of the goal. Restrepo read the header well and again was there to make the diving save.

San Antonio FC would strike just minutes later. In the 63rd minute, a San Antonio throw deep in Republic FC’s attacking third sprung a counter attack down the right side. Kris Tyrpak led the attack down the right side before chipping the ball toward Akwafei Ajeakwa. The substitute forward attempted to head the ball down, but was tripped up in the box, earning San Antonio a penalty. Castillo stepped up to take the ensuing penalty, firing a strike to the top right side of the goal that just beat the outstretched hand of Evan Newton who had guessed right. The penalty put San Antonio FC ahead 1-0.

Republic FC fought valiantly to find an equalizer and looked to have found it in the 84th minute. Midfielder Jeremy Hall played a long ball back into the box after a Republic FC corner kick was cleared to near midfield. Hall’s long-ball found Emrah Klimenta who headed the ball across goal to Ochoa who was making a run down the middle of the box. Ochoa was able to get a foot on Klimenta’s cross, but Restrepo, who made four saves on the night, was again there for the save.

Republic FC complete their second three-match road stretch of the season when they travel to Salt Lake City to take on Real Monarchs SLC on Saturday, May 13. Kickoff is 6:30 pm. The match will be broadcast live on CW31.

Sacramento Republic FC dominated much of the first half, controlling 55 percent of the possession and creating almost all of the chances. Republic FC forced Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 keeper Spencer Richey to make five saves in the first half, while Republic FC goalie Evan Newton was not required to make a single save.

Republic FC forced Richey to make his first save of the match in just the 6th minute. Defender James Kiffe sent a free kick from near the centerline toward the top of the box that was cleared, but only as far midfielder Danny Barrera a few yards away. Barrera nodded the ball down to Wilson Kneeshaw who touched the ball down before sending a shot on goal, but Richey was there for the save.

Republic FC would create three consecutive chances in the 13th, 15th and 16th minutes. The first chance was created after a WFC2 giveaway in their half of the field. Barrera intercepted the ball before playing forward Tyler Blackwood into a one-on-one situation with Richey. Blackwood sent a low shot on goal, but he was unable to get the ball over the sliding Richey. The second chance was again started by Barrera who laid the ball off to forward Sammy Ochoa who was at the top right corner of the box. Ochoa unleashed a strike that looked destined for goal, but Richey was able to deflect the ball just enough that it skidded off the top of the bar and out.

The third chance for Republic FC came in the 16th minute after a cross by midfielder Agustin Cazarez was cleared. Kiffe was sitting unmarked near the top left corner of the box and waited for the ball to make a perfect bounce before sending a left-footed curling volley toward goal, but a diving save by Richey kept the match scoreless, which would hold going into halftime.

Republic FC continued to control the possession in the second half, holding 65 percent of the ball. They would get their first chance of the second half in the 57th minute after Barrera again intercepted the ball in the middle of the pitch. The midfielder then played a through ball to Ochoa who did well to keep his man at bay before sending a low shot toward goal. Ochoa’s shot beat the sliding Richey, but skipped just wide left of the goal keeping the match scoreless.

Despite being virtually untested in the first half, Newton was ready when called upon in both the 62nd and 72nd minutes. The first chance came as David Norman Jr. made a run down the left side of the field. The midfielder then hit a curling ball that found a streaking Gloire Amanda near the top of the box. Amanda attempted a volleyed shot that looked destined for goal, but Newton was able to make a tremendous diving save.

The second chance for WFC2 also came from the right side, but this time it was Andy Thoma making a curled pass to the middle. Substitute forward Thomas Sanner was open as he tried to redirect the pass with his right foot toward goal, but Newton was again there for the save, sliding in at the last second.

Republic FC had a few late chances at goal, but none better than a shot by Kiffe in the 77th minute. Kiffe had found space on the left side of the field before hitting what looked to be a cross toward the box. The ball, however took a different trajectory as it began to travel toward the top left corner of the goal. Richey was quick to recover and knocked the ball over the bar and safely away for WFC2.

The draw ends a three-match losing streak for Republic FC and earns them valuable points on the road as they begin their second three-match road stretch of the season. Republic FC will be back in action on Saturday, May 6 as they take on the USL Western Conference-leading San Antonio FC. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. at Toyota Field. Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 0, Portland Timbers 2 2

Sacramento Republic FC and Portland Timbers 2 played a back and forth first half of the match. Republic FC came closest with a few scoring opportunities off set pieces. Midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith nearly scored on a direct free kick in the 4th minute, but just couldn’t quite get the ball over the defensive wall. A few minutes later it was Trickett-Smith again, this time linking up with Republic FC captain Danny Barrera to try to beat the T2 defensive line with some layoff passes, but unfortunately the attack was again foiled by the T2 defense.

T2 would jump on the score sheet first in the 40th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick for a foul called in the box on Republic FC defender Jeremy Hall. Midfielder Vilyan Bijev calmly stepped up to the spot in front the imposing north bleacher and Tower Bridge Battalion, who were screaming down on him, and coolly sent a chipped penalty kick that beat Republic FC keeper Evan Newton and put the visitors in front 1-0 going into halftime.

Republic FC came out of halftime strong with a couple threatening crosses from defender James Kiffe, but neither was converted into a goal. Wilson Kneeshaw was able to get his head to one of Kiffe’s spectacular services a few minutes later, but just couldn’t steer it on frame. Trickett-Smith also had a chance for a strike in the 53rd minute after a perfect drop-off pass from forward Trevin Caesar, but the T2 defense was able to block the shot away.

T2 would add to their lead in the 68th minute after Newton came off his line to stop a streaking attack. Newton made the initial stop, but the rebound was collected by midfielder Victor Arboleda who took the ball a few touches to his right before sending a grounded shot into the bottom left corner of the goal giving T2 the 2-0 lead.

Republic FC nearly pulled one back in the 84th minute when defender Chris Christian sent a long-looping ball into the box which found the head of Trickett-Smith. The midfielder redirected a header on net, but T2 keeper Wade Hamilton stretched out to make a crucial save to essentially secure the visitors’ two-goal victory.

“We gifted them the game,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “We had our chances in the match. It wasn’t about tactics; we just couldn’t put it in the back of the net. We were our own worst enemy.”

Sacramento Republic FC to Broadcast 21 Matches on CW31 in 2017 Including Select Away Matches

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 13, 2017) – Sacramento Republic FC renewed its broadcast partnerships with CW31 and Sports 1140 KHTK. At least 20 of the club’s remaining 28 USL matches, and a potential international friendly match will air on local TV. Republic FC’s broadcasts on CW31 will begin with the club’s first locally televised road match on Saturday, April 15.

CBS13/CW31 and Sports 1140 KHTK serve as the official broadcast partners of Sacramento Republic FC.

“We are always striving to elevate the beautiful game and reach more people in the Sacramento region and we believe our broadcast partnership with CW31, CBS13 and Sports 1140 KHTK continues this mission,” said Republic FC Vice President of Marketing and Communications Erika Bjork. “The addition of away matches to this seasons’ broadcast schedule allows Republic FC fans a new way to watch our boys in Old Glory Red that was previously unavailable.”

CBS13/CW31 and Sports 1140 KHTK serve as the official broadcast partners of Sacramento Republic FC.

Republic FC will broadcast 21 matches on CW31 in 2017, including 14 of Republic FC’s remaining 15 home matches and seven of the club’s road matches. This will be the first season that Republic FC road matches will be broadcast on local TV. Broadcast production of the matches will be done by VISTA through the USL Television Network.

Home and road matches televised by CW31 will feature the duo of Rob McAllister and Kevin Goldthwaite, who return to the booth for their fourth season broadcasting the club’s matches. Good Day Sacramento anchor Julissa Ortiz will resume duties as sideline reporter for home matches to round out the television broadcast team.

Republic FC will broadcast ten home matches on Sports 1140 KHTK in 2017. Select Republic FC 2017 U.S. Open Cup home matches will also be aired (dates to be announced). The radio broadcasts will have the team of Jason Lockhart and Carmichael Dave calling the action, returning for their fourth season.

The first Republic FC TV broadcast of the season will be their away match against Swope Park Rangers on Saturday, Apr. 15. Kickoff is 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast on CW31.

Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 0, Oklahoma City Energy FC 1

Republic FC started the match very strong, attacking the Oklahoma City Energy FC defense early and often. Republic FC saw their first strong chance just 30 seconds into the match after a play down the left side where midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith received the ball around 30 yards out and unleashed a powerful shot. Trickett-Smith’s shot looked destined for the near post, but Energy FC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi was there for the sliding save.

Despite Republic FC enjoying over 60 percent of the possession in the first half, it was Energy FC who would break through first in the 30th minute. Defender Michael Harris made an impressive flip throw from near the centerline that deflected off the head of a Republic FC player toward the middle of the box. Midfielder Miguel Gonzalez was in the right place at the right time as he redirected the deflection with a beautiful bicycle kick past Republic FC keeper Evan Newton and into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving Energy FC the 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Republic FC continued their pressure on the Energy FC defense in the second half, seeing their first chance on goal in the 57th minute. Defender James Kiffe threw the ball in to forward Tyler Blackwood on the left side of the box. Blackwood immediately played the ball back to Kiffe who split the defense before laying it off to forward Wilson Kneeshaw. The forward chased the ball back toward the middle before playing it back to Trickett-Smith who hit a strong shot from about 25 yards out in the middle of the field, but Laurendi was there again for the save maintaining Energy FC’s 1-0 lead.

In the 82nd minute Republic FC was reduced to just 10-men. Defender Chris Christian was shown a second yellow card for a hard tackle on Miguel Gonzalez near the middle of the pitch. The red card was the first for Republic FC in 2017, but their third in Oklahoma City since 2014.

Republic FC battled hard for the final eight minutes despite being down a man, getting one of their best looks at goal three minutes into stoppage time. Kiffe made a good move down the left side of the field, splitting the two-man defense near the edge of the box, before sending a cross toward the back post. Substitute forward Trevin Caesar made a good run to be in position, but his header went high.

Republic FC moves to 3-1-0 on the season and are still atop the Western Conference table. They will continue their road stretch on Saturday, Apr. 15 when they take on Swope Park Rangers KC.
