Although tonight’s match up was scheduled as a friendly, both USL clubs played as if points were at stake in the first meeting of these two USL clubs.

Republic FC forward Trevin Caesar saw the first chance of the match in the 5th minute after getting behind the defense. Caesar sprinted onto the ball and tried to flick a shot over the oncoming defender, but the shot was deflected out of play by the defense. The ensuing corner kick led to a curling shot opportunity from midfielder Adam Moffat, which was caught by FC Cincinnati keeper Mitch Hildebrandt.

Republic FC had another chance on goal in the 18th minute when Caesar streaked past the defense again. The new Republic FC forward drew two defenders with him as he wisely dropped a pass back for Sammy Ochoa who could not get a shot off as the ball rolled past him. Tyler Blackwood was in good position to send the loose ball into the net with a curling, left-footed shot that was saved by Hildebrandt.

FC Cincinnati tallied shortly after that in the 21st minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a disputed foul was called in the box on a free kick from Aodhan Quinn. The midfielder then stepped up to the spot and converted a left-footed penalty strike past a diving Republic FC keeper Evan Newton to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

Republic FC midfielder Jeremy Hall almost capitalized on a loose clearance from FC Cincinnati in the 34th minute, but his shot on goal went right into the waiting chest of Hildebrandt. Danny Barrera, Blackwood and Caesar also had chances in the waning minutes of the first half, but FC Cincinnati was able to hold off the barrage of attacks and maintain their one goal lead.

Second half substitute Wilson Kneeshaw put Republic FC up in the 82nd minute when he tapped in a rebound opportunity after a fantastic shot from Harry Williams. Kneeshaw’s tap-in gave Republic FC a one-goal lead that lasted until the waning seconds of stoppage time. In a last gasp effort for the visitors, defender Paul Nicholson was able to send a perfect cross into the middle of the box to find an airborne Harrison Delbridge, who made no mistake with his header finish. Delbridge, a former Republic FC defender, rescued a draw for FC Cincinnati with the last action of the match, which ended 2-2.

“It’s a preseason friendly but we’re really preparing and that’s why we have this match,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “We wanted to treat it like a USL game and it’s going to be very difficult if this [officiating] is going to continue because even at the end when there’s three minutes of added time, the games over, and [it ended after] 4:30. I know it sounds like sour grapes, but it’s important when they’re pushing to salvage something from a game that should have been dead and buried. But I’m very pleased with the way we’ve come together.

“I am very pleased with the way we have come together so quickly,” continued Buckle. “It’s a big night for all the debutantes. I think you can see from tonight that hopefully we are going to be a force…and of course, the bench is very strong. It is a real plus.”

Republic FC will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 11 when they travel to Reno, Nev. to take on the newest addition to USL, Reno 1868 FC.  Kickoff is 4 p.m.

Despite Republic FC enjoying much of the possession in the first half, it was Sacramento State that had the first serious chance at a goal in the 9th minute. After an attack by Republic FC, Sac State started a counter attack that saw the collegiate team earning a 3-on-2 attack.  Midfielder Paul Geyer played down the middle of the field before laying the ball off to Alejandro Renteria who was running wide right.  Renteria took a few touches before striking a low shot toward goal, but Republic FC Dominik Jakubek was quick to a knee to save the shot and preserve the shutout.

Republic FC had their strongest looks on goal in the 40th and 44th minutes, after dominating more of the first half possession.  In the 40th minute it was Daniel Trickett-Smith who found space in the middle of the field around 30 yards from goal and fired a strike toward goal.  The shot looked destined for goal, but Sac State goalkeeper James Del Curto was able to jump and parry the ball out of danger.

In the 44th minute Lamin Suma took the ball out wide left and went one-on-one with his defender.  After beating his man, Suma sent a cross toward the middle where forward Christian Chaney was making a run.  Chaney was able to get a head on the ball, but only able to flick it back to Gabe Gissie who was making a run on the right side of the box.  Gissie was able to hit a shot toward goal, but the ball went just wide right, keeping the match scoreless at the break.

The forward then played the ball back to Academy midfielder Roberto Hategan, who sent a perfect left-footed cross toward the middle of the box.  Forward Harry Williams fought off his man as he leapt for the cross, connecting with the ball and sending a headed shot toward goal.  The shot however was just high and over the ball as the match would end in a scoreless draw.

The match marked a special moment for Republic FC defender Emrah Klimenta who returned to action for the first time since injuring the ACL on his left knee on July 2, 2016.  Klimenta played 27 minutes against Sac State before being subbed off and greeted to a standing ovation from his teammates on the bench.

“It felt great to get out on the field after such a long time, even if it was just for a few minutes,” said Klimenta about his return. “I have been looking forward to this moment since the day that I got injured and it finally happened.  I was happy that all the hard work that myself and the training staff put in has paid off.  All in all it was a happy moment for me.”

The match also provided an opportunity for Republic FC Academy players to earn minutes with the first team.  Republic FC U-18 Academy members Sorrentino, Giovanni Aguilar and Francis Avoce and U-16 Academy members Hategan and Oscar Govea all saw action against Sac State.  All five Academy players were on the field for the final 17 minutes of the match.

The match began with both teams feeling each other out, but neither gaining a clear advantage.  Republic FC would find the first great look at goal in the 7th minute when forward Tyler Blackwood stole a bad pass near the top of the box.  Blackwood then had a one-on-one situation with Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham.  Blackwood attempted to slide the ball to the far right corner of the goal, but Bingham was quick to the ground, deflecting the ball away from goal, but only as far as forward Trevin Caesar who was following the play on the right side of the box.  Caesar then sent a centering pass to Sammy Ochoa who was in the middle of the box.  Ochoa took his own shot on goal, but a Quakes defender was there to block the shot and clear it from danger, keeping the match scoreless.

The Quakes would strike first in the 15th minute.  After multiple attempts to throw the ball in from the top of the far right side were thwarted by defender James Kiffe, Quakes defender Nick Lima found a streaking Tommy Thompson on the right side of the box.  Thompson leaped to connect with the throw and sent his one-touch pass to the center of the box, finding midfielder Shea Salinas who fought off his mark and flicked the ball into the goal giving the Quakes a 1-0 lead which would hold until half.

Republic FC came out of the break with a renewed sense of energy and began to relentlessly pressure the Quakes backline in hopes of finding an equalizer.  Republic FC found their chance in the 53rd minute.  Jeremy Hall fought off his man while running down the right side of the box before sending a pass back to Danny Barrera who had found open space at the top right corner of the box.  Barrera took a touch before sending a strike toward goal that was blocked by a sliding Anibal Godoy.  The defender however was judged to have blocked the shot with his hand giving Republic FC a penalty.  Newly-signed forward Ochoa stepped up and calmly placed the ball in the lower right corner as Bingham dove left, leveling the score 1-1.

Republic FC, playing in just their third preseason match of 2017, would make several substitutions following the goal, as Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle looked to try new lineups and formations before the start of the season.

In the 66th minute the Quakes would regain their lead.  Substitute forward Darwin Ceren intercepted a pass in the middle the field. Ceren then played the ball down the middle of the field to midfielder Simon Dawkins who had found space.  Dawkins drove the ball down the middle before sending a low shot to the left of the goal, just past the outstretched hand of substitute goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek, giving the Quakes 2-1 lead.

Despite a strong effort by Republic FC to equalize, the Quakes would add two late goals in the 79th and 90th minutes to ensure a 4-1 victory.  Midfielder Jahmir Hyka would score the Quakes’ third goal after Godoy received a long ball on the right side and slid a pass to Hyka who was streaking down the middle of the box.  Hyka redirected Godoy’s pass into the net for the 3-1 lead.  Danny Hoesen would score the final goal of the match after receiving a long pass from Andres Imperiale in the middle of the field.  Hoesen took a few touches before sending the ball into the bottom right corner giving the Quakes the 4-1 win.

Republic FC will return to action when they take on Sacramento State Men’s Soccer Team on Wednesday, Mar. 1 at Hornet Field.  Kickoff is 3 p.m. Tickets are available on the Sacramento State athletics website.

Despite a strong effort by Republic FC to equalize, the Quakes would add two late goals in the 79th and 90th minutes to ensure a 4-1 victory.  Midfielder Jahmir Hyka would score the Quakes’ third goal after Godoy received a long ball on the right side and slid a pass to Hyka who was streaking down the middle of the box.  Hyka redirected Godoy’s pass into the net for the 3-1 lead.  Danny Hoesen would score the final goal of the match after receiving a long pass from Andres Imperiale in the middle of the field.  Hoesen took a few touches before sending the ball into the bottom right corner giving the Quakes the 4-1 win.

Republic FC came out strong from the beginning, constantly pressuring the Gold’s backline.  In just the 2nd minute Republic FC would open the scoring.  Defender Elliott Hord received the ball on the right side of the field before rushing almost to the endline near the edge of the box.  Hord then played the ball back to the middle of the box where forward Gabe Gissie gathered Hord’s pass and calmly slotted the ball back across goal into the right side of the net, putting Republic FC ahead 1-0.

Midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith would double Republic FC’s lead shortly after in the 6th minute.  After an encouraging attack near the middle of the box, forward Wilson Kneeshaw had his shot saved by a diving John Connolly.  The ensuing rebound was batted around in the box before falling to Trickett-Smith who settled the ball and shot it into the open left side of the goal, putting Republic FC ahead 2-0.

“I am delighted with what we have done with the ball,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “In any game of football it is hard to find the back of the net, as we saw last season, so the intention was to add in that department and I think you can see that we have created chances and found the back of the net.”
