For Sacramento Republic FC, 2016 was another record year as we captured our second Emmy, set a new season attendance record and brought home award after award at the USL Operations Summit in November. (And that’s not even counting our massive block party on L Street with some impressive VIPs as well as a fall visit from MLS’ series, The Movement with our friend Calen Carr.)

To help us count down our top Republic FC moments of 2016, we want our fans to help us decide what their most memorable moments were of the season. Register your kids to compete in our Winter Indoor Soccer Tournament presented by Raley’s and Bel Air. The tournament features U-8 through U-18 brackets for boys and girls, with the winners of each bracet winning a private training session from Republic FC’s Chris Malenab.

The tournament is open to ages U-8 through U-18 (calendar year, not school year) with registration closing Friday, Dec. 23. Cost is $225 per team for 5-10 players.

Republic FC Academy U-15/16 defender Edward Berumen has been called up to the U.S. U-16 Boys’ National Team by head coach Shaun Tsakiris. The U.S. U-16 BNT will compete in the prestigious IMG Cup: Boys Invitational from Dec. 17-Dec.19 in Bradenton, Fla.

The cup is a round-robin style format, with the U.S. U-16s competing in the cup’s U-17 Blue division and playing against Next Gen USA Showcase Select on Dec. 17.  The U-16s will then go against FC Florida Prep Academy on Dec. 18 and then against Miramar United Elite FC on Dec. 19. This the first competitive tournament the U-16 BNT will compete in since the Val de Marne tournament in October.

This season, Berumen has appeared in 11 matches for the Republic FC U-15/16s, scoring two goals and starting in all of his appearances. Berumen is the fifth Republic FC Academy player to be called up to the U.S. National Youth Teams ranks since August and the ninth overall since the inception of the Republic FC Academy. Republic FC Academy U-17/18 forward Alexis Dionicio was called up to the U.S. U-19 MNT in September, while Republic FC Academy U-13 goalkeeper Gavin Krenecki and midfielder Dominic Vegaalban were called up to the U.S. U-14s in November. U-17/18 goalkeeper Cameron Douglas, who has represented the U.S. several times since joining Republic FC’s Academy, received his most recent call-up in August with the U.S. U-18 MNT.  

Last season, Academy alumni Nabilai Kibunguchy and David Burns were called up to the U.S. U-19 and U-20 Men’s National Teams, respectively. Current Republic FC U-17/18 goalkeeper Cameron Douglas was called up to the U.S. U-18s, while Republic FC U-15/16 midfielder Nicholas Hategan was called up to the U.S. U-16s. As part of the Food Literacy Center focus on inspiring children to eat their vegetables, Saturday’s cookie decorating party will feature healthier cookie options and tree nut-free variations. There will also be “raw” cookie variations, made with ingredients such as pumpkin seeds, dates and oat bran.

The program aims to tackle childhood obesity at a young age by teaching kids about healthy food options and at-home cooking to improve healthy eating habits.

The event is part of the club’s 12 Days of Republic FC, a seasonal celebration featuring a new sweepstakes and Team Store offer each day as well as other special club events, including happy hours and a ice skating night at the Downtown Ice Rink.

“It is always exciting to be pitched against close rivals, and our rivalry with San Jose continues to remain healthy,” said Republic FC Director of Football Graham Smith. “From our players’ point of view, it is an opportunity to compete against players who generally operate at a higher level, and, for fans of both teams, it is an opportunity to see the stages of development their squads are at.  The games against MLS opposition are part of our preseason program, and they help us to gauge the readiness of our group for the future.”

This will be the sixth time that the two clubs have faced each other since Republic FC’s inaugural season in 2014.  The clubs have met in a preseason friendly in each of the last three seasons, as well as twice in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round.  San Jose has won all of the previous meetings.

Multiple Earthquakes players were loaned to Republic FC during the clubs’ three-year partnership, including Sacramento-area natives Tommy Thompson and Adam Jahn.  Republic FC midfielder JJ Koval was also loaned to Republic FC on several occasions before eventually signing with the USL club prior to the 2016 season.
