What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (13-12-6, 45 pts) already clinched their spot in the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs but still have some work to do in order to avoid a midweek play-in game on Wednesday. 

Over the weekend, the boys in Old Glory Red fell to Orange County, 3-2, at Papa Murphy’s Park but this might not be the last time Sacramento goes head-to-head with the SoCal club this season. Simon Elliott’s men can finish anywhere from fifth to eighth and a postseason matchup against OCSC, or even Real Monarchs, isn’t entirely out of the question. 

In order to avoid the play-in game on October 23, Republic FC must beat Real Monarchs and either El Paso has to lose or draw to LA Galaxy II or Orange County has to lose to Fresno. If all three scenarios play out, the Indomitable Club will snag the fifth seed and travel to the fourth-place side next weekend, either Oct. 26 or 27. If SRFC loses or draws to Monarchs, Sacramento is a lock to host a Wednesday night play-in match and will finish seventh or eighth, depending on Austin’s result against Tacoma. 

As for the teams’ most recent result against Orange County, Republic FC struck first by way of a Cameron Iwasa goal that was set up perfectly by Thomas Enevoldsen who provided a flawless through ball to the Sacramento native in space. The visitors netted once in the first half and again in the second to take the lead before Iwasa provided a 64thminute equalizer, his 16thof the season which is currently fourth-best in the league. OCSC scored one late to escape Sacramento with all three points. 

Republic FC defender Juan Barahona, who was on international duty with the El Salvador Men’s National Team and missed the FC Juarez and OCSC matches, will be available for Saturday’s match in Utah. Barahona started both matches for El Salvador against Saint Lucia and Montserrat (both resulted in shutout victories). 

Sacramento’s postseason fate depends tremendously on Saturday’s result but the team currently does not have control over whether or not a win will be enough to avoid the play-in game. Once matches end on Saturday night between LA Galaxy II-El Paso, Tacoma-Austin and Orange County-Fresno, we’ll finally know exactly who Republic FC has next.

Monarchs, currently in possesion of the fourth and final playoff-hosting spot, is arguably the most dangerous team in the Western Conference at this current time given their piping hot run of form. But Saturday’s match will be the third game in one week for the Utahn club so tired legs might make an appearance for the home side late in the second half. 

Sandwiched between the Phoenix win and Saturday’s match against Republic FC was Monarchs most recent road trip to Texas where the Utahn club played out a 2-2 draw against playoff-bound Austin Bold FC. The visitors took the lead on two separate occasions but were unable to leave the Lone Star State with all three points. 

Leading the front line for Monarchs has been Douglas Martinez whose 15 goals (in only 21 appearances) and six assists are both a team-best. Maikel Chang is hot on his trail with 13 goals and five assists but leads the team in shots (57) and scoring chances created (69). 

Head-to-Head

The Indomitable Club has historically had some trouble gainst Real Monarchs, given in 12 league matches only twice has Republic FC been victorious. It was June of 2016 when Sacramento last beat Monarchs in Salt Lake City, but the boys in Old Glory Red have much more on the line this time around than just three points in the standings to play for. 

The last time these two clubs clashed resulted in a 1-1 draw at Papa Murphy’s Park to kickoff the 2019 USL Championship season back in early-March. The visitors took an early lead before defender Charalampos Chantzopoulos bagged a late equalizer with midfielder Sam Werner providing the assist.

What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (13-12-6, 45 pts) picked up a priceless point on Wednesday night following a dramatic come-from-behind 2-2 draw against LA Galaxy II at Papa Murphy’s Park. 

Forward Thomas Enevoldsen fired the hosts ahead in the 20th minute with a picturesque curling effort into the top far corner of the net. The goal was the Danish strikers seventh goal in nine games since joining the Indomitable Club in August from Indy Eleven. Los Dos managed to level the score through Ethan Zubak before the break and took their first lead of the match in the 72nd minute after a misfired shot happened to roll to a wide open Mohammed Kamara who kept his composure and netted an easy close-range attempt. But Simon Elliott’s men continued pushing forward and found their equalizer late in the 89th minute when Matt Mahoney guided a Mitchell Taintor header past the LA goalkeeper to complete the comeback and steal a point from Los Dos. 

Despite surrendering two goals to LA, Republic FC still boasts the third-best defense in the Western Conference with only 36 goals against during league play. In games that immediately followed a match where SRFC allowed two goals or more, the team has responded well and posts a 5-3-3 record on the year in all competitions. 

The result leaves the boys in Old Glory Red in sixth place with 45 points from 31 matches. If Sacramento can win out, the fourth and final playoff-hosting seed isn’t a guarantee but it’s still very much a possibility. Republic FC sits behind Austin Bold FC (5th, 46 pts) and Real Monarchs (4th, 46 pts) but has an away match on the final day against Monarchs that could ultimately determine the last remaining first-round home playoff game honor. 

What about the other guys?

Tulsa Roughnecks FC (7-14-10, 31 pts) have endured something of a campaign to forget but at least the team can hold their hats on their recent run of success. After suffering through 18 straight games without a win, a run that lasted from late-April until late-August, the club from the Sooner State has been victorious in three of their last six games (3-1-2). 

The thorn in Tulsa’s side all season has been their defense, even at home. Roughnecks FC have surrendered the second-most goals in the Western Conference with 62 and since June 1, in five of their last nine home matches, Tulsa has allowed at least two goals or more (1-4-0) to the opposition. The Oklahoman club also has conceded the third-most fouls in the entire USL with 467.

While the defense has been a mess for most of the season, the Tulsa offense has been the lone bright spot at times. In their last home game, Roughnecks FC roughed up San Antonio FC 4-3 with an 87th minute Fredlin Mompremier strike sealing all three points for the hosts last Wednesday night. Anchoring the attack is Rodrigo da Costa whose team-leading 11 assists is the second-most in the USL and he also leads the team in goals with nine. The Brazilian playmaker’s 67 scoring chances created is currently third-most in the Western Conference. But the creative midfielder isn’t the only offensive threat on the Roughnecks FC roster as Luca Lobo and Cristhian Altamirano have both recorded seven scores this season.

Republic FC (13-12-5, 44 pts) still have full control over a first-round playoff home game despite dropping Saturday’s contest, 2-1, to El Paso Locomotive FC at a rain-soaked Papa Murphy’s Park. 

Through 30 matches, Simon Elliott’s men are in seventh-place in the Western Conference but if his side can manage to win out, Sacramento will claim at least fourth-place and host a postseason match come late-October. Republic FC currently have a game in hand on Austin Bold (5th, 46 pts) and have upcoming matches against Orange County (6th, 45 pts) and Real Monarchs (4th, 46 pts). 

After weather delays caused by torrential rain and hail, the boys in Old Glory Red took the early lead in the 14th minute through Thomas Enevoldsen. Forward Stefano Bonomo headed across goal a Jaime Villarreal cross that defender Matt Mahoney nodded just enough on target that the Danish striker was able to finish from close range. The goal was Enevoldsen sixth in eight matches with the Indomitable Club. 

Locomotive FC equalized early in the second half through Bryam Rebellon before Josue Gomez gave the visitors the lead in extra time. 

Saturday’s result came as a surprise given the hosts had a handful of solid scoring chances and outshot El Paso 19 to 10. With the game still tied 1-1, SRFC’s best second half chances to take the lead came when Keven Aleman struck the post in the 57th minute and Cameron Iwasa crushed the crossbar ten minutes later.

What about the other guys?

LA Galaxy II (11-9-10, 43 pts) have surged into playoff contention after a slow start to the season. Since Junior Gonzalez took over as head coach in July, his side are 5-3-2 and 3-1-1 over their last five matches. Through 30 games, Los Dos are in eighth-place in the Western Conference and if the season ended today, the Southern California club would host a play-in playoff game. 

In their most recent match, LA blew by OKC Energy FC 5-1 after trailing 1-0 to open the contest. Prior to the demolition of OKC, Los Dos were typically the first team to find the scoresheet and had struck first in four of their previous five matches. Anchoring the front line for LA this season has been Kai Koreniuk whose nine goals leads the team. Ethan Zubak and Augustine Williams each have seven scores between the two on the year. Brian Iloski and Jose Hernandez share the team-lead in assists with four apiece.

Simon Elliott’s men took an early advantage through Thomas Enevoldsen who netted his fifth goal since joining the club last month. Drew Skundrich picked out Cameron Iwasa at the top of the box who spotted Enevoldsen surging towards the goal. The Danish striker buried his shot with his first touch, his fifth with the Indomitable Club. The assist was Iwasa’s 16th of his Republic FC career and tied him with Danny Barrera as the club’s all-time assists leader in league play. The boys in Old Glory Red doubled their lead eight minutes later when Dariusz Formella scored his first career goal with the club in his second career start. Austin managed to cut the deficit in half in the 33rd minute but SRFC held on to withstand a Bold FC barrage of 24 shots and claim all three points.

The boys in Old Glory Red took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half before the hosts crept back with two second half scores, but they ultimately held on for a crucial 3-2 road win. 

Stefano Bonomo, whose Saturday evening efforts against San Antonio FC earned him his second USL Team of the Week honors of the season, opened the scoring in the 21st minute after heading home a Sam Werner corner at the far post. Cameron Iwasa lifted his goal tally on the year up to 10 in the 33rd minute when the Sacramento-native connected on a Drew Skundrich cross and powered a header past the San Antonio goalkeeper. It was the second consecutive season he’s hit double digits and the third time he’s done so during his SRFC career. On the cusp of halftime, Bonomo bagged his second brace of the season when the former New York Red Bulls forward tapped in a perfectly placed Juan Barahona cross. 

Three goals against the Texan club secured all three points and elevated Republic FC firmly back into the playoff picture with 30 points from 21 matches and into seventh place in the Western Conference based on a superior goal differential.

Las Vegas Lights FC (7-9-5, 26 pts) are a tough team to beat at home, but on the road is a completely different story. The Nevadan side have just a single win away from home all season and have lost their last two straight road matches. This particular series has a rich history of creating classics. The most recent was a 2-1 come-from-behind win that was headlined by Cameron Iwasa’s 61st minute equalizer, making the Sacramento-native Republic FC’s all-time leading goalscorer. Jeremy Hall headed home the game-winner seven minutes later to seal all three points for SRFC. Earlier in the season in late-March, the boys in Old Glory Red trailed by two scores until an 80th minute Iwasa strike followed by a Toros own goal in injury time solidified the comeback for Simon Elliott’s men and rescue a point.
