SACRAMENTO, California (October 30, 2021) – An unforgettable evening at Heart Health Park resulted in a 1-1 draw to close out the 2021 season.
The sendoff for Cameron Iwasa dominated the night, as fans from kickoff to the final whistle waved their cheer cards adorned with the number 31 and gave the forward the loudest cheers of the night every time he touched the ball. The forward netted the equalizer in the 70th minute off a cross from Nabi Kibunguchy, salvaging a point for Sacramento in a fitting end to his 2,415 day career as a professional footballer.
“It was fitting for Cameron at the end to score the equalizer in front of a packed house to have the perfect farewell,” said Coach Mark Briggs. “I’m really happy for Cameron and I’m really happy for everyone in the family that got to witness his final goal.”
Ahead of his final professional appearance, Indomitable Club honored their most storied player with an on field ceremony, gifting him a card commemorating the statistics from his career alongside his family in The emotions would eventually settle as both squads opened the contest in competitive fashion.
Iwasa came close to opening the scoring in the 24th minute, taking a great pass from Jaime Villarreal in stride down the left flank into the attacking third. His attempt sailed high of the target however, keeping things scoreless.
Sacramento knocked on the door just after the half hour mark. After midfielder Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu was taken down by San Diego’s back line, Cameron Iwasa countered and carried into the penalty area before being stopped at the top of the penalty box. Moments later, Emil Cuello put in a good cross from the left flank, but his ball was deflected out by goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira.
San Diego answered with a pair of chances moments later. A shot from Tumi Moshobane went just wide of the target immediately after Cuello’s cross was deflected out, and a great stop from Carlos Saldaña kept an attempt from Augustine Williams out of goal. Another chance came close to pulling the visitors ahead in the 37th minute, but a point-blank attempt from Jack Blake sailed high.
Another dangerous chance materialized for the visitors not ten minutes after the half. A deflected pass found the feet of Jack Blake on the right wing, but Augustine Williams’ strike off the midfielder’s cross went high of the target.
Landon Donovan’s men pulled ahead in the 67th minute. After finding space just outside the penalty box, Alejandro Guido punched one through to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage on their tenth shot of the evening.
Ten minutes later, the man of the night got Sacramento on the board to equalize. A recycled set piece found its way to Nabi Kibunguchy in the 70th minute, after which the defender put in a great cross that was headed in by Cam Iwasa- his eighth score of the season and the 60th and final of his career. Iwasa finished the contest with a team-high three shots.
Iwasa would leave the match just after stoppage time to a standing ovation from all in attendance, being replaced by Mario Penagos. “You spend so much of your life doing this, working for it,” said Iwasa after the match. “I’m going to miss it.”
The 2021 season comes to a close following the draw, which saw Sacramento finish with a record of 8-12-12. The Indomitable Club will return to the pitch in 2022, for the ninth season of play in the Capital City.
