SACRAMENTO, California (June 26, 2021) – Sacramento Republic FC hosted to Phoenix Rising FC for the Indomitable Club’s first home match in three weeks. With fireworks at the end of the night – celebrating a full house, Dan Casey opened his account and bagged his first career goal with the club during Saturday night’s 2-1 defeat at Heart Health Park.

"[The result was] Frustrating, obviously, a number of things that are frustrating with that," Head Coach Mark Briggs said following the match. "But to end on a positive [note], and show the fight and desire that we did in the second half — we're down to 10 men… That's obviously something that we can move forward with … something we can build on and something that we can have a platform to move forward with."

Sacramento’s sharp passes led to a quality possession in the final third nearly half an hour into the contest, only to be ended by a foul. Phoenix opened the scoring with a 31st-minute goal from Solomon Asante. 

Down to ten men after a red card to Fatai Alashe in the 38th minute, Republic FC built a promising chance just before the half with a streaking Cam Iwasa down the left side.

On the night, Real Monarch’s Milan Iloski bagged a brace in the opening half which ultimately proved to be the difference for Mark Briggs’ men. 

Despite the result, SRFC’s Mitchell Taintor made a number of positive contributions including leading the squad in touches (78), total aerial duels (4), passes (69), successful passes (60), clearances (3) and interceptions (2). 

In net, Republic FC goalkeeper Tomas Gomez made three saves to keep his side within striking distance during the match. 

The Indomitable Club continues the current two-game road trip on June 19 when SRFC pays a visit to Oakland Roots SC.

Fellow SRFC Academy product Rafael Jauregui made his first appearance on the year when the Sacramento native entered the match as a second half substitute. Another former academy player, Nabi Kibunguchy – on-loan from Minnesota United – also came on a sub and made a heroic defensive play late in the game. 

Orange County opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on a play that developed after Ronaldo Dumas put home a ball from close range that batted around in the box.

Orange County doubled its lead out of the halftime gate, as Eero Markkanen put OCSC ahead by two in the 49th minute off the assist from Brent Richards.

The Indomitable Club responded from consecutive shutout defeats to slam three goals by the visiting Roots SC goalkeeper Luis Barraza – recently signed on-loan from MLS-side NYCFC – en route to obtaining a point following the six-goal thriller.

Shutout losses in back-to-back matches, however, isn’t necessarily cause for concern for head coach Mark Briggs. 

“I’m not worrying too much about everybody in that locker room and it will come, but it’s not going to be easy,” Briggs said. “We’re going to face adversity every time we play. It’s how we come back from adversity, but now I’m not worried. I still trust every single person in that locker room.”

The Sacramento-native steered his shot by the visiting goalkeeper – currently listed on Real Salt Lake’s MLS roster – to grant Sacramento an early 1-0 lead. Kharlton Belmar sprung the offensive attack when he delivered an on-target ball to Lacroix who picked out Iwasa in the box.

It didn’t take long for Formella to make a positive impact on the match, as the Polish playmaker picked out an open Iwasa towards the far post and for the second time on Saturday, the forward fired home a close-range effort to double the Indomitable Club’s lead.   

The victory was the final match of Republic FC’s preseason schedule and the boys in Old Glory Red certainly went out on a high note. 

“Yeah, I think overall it's been a good preseason,” Briggs said. “Preseason is a time to obviously get the players fit, get the players sharp, get the players ready. We're in a decent spot, you’re never where you want to be. I think that's just a natural as being a coach, you’re never quite where you want to be.”

“But I'm happy with the progress each week. Each week we've trained each game we've played we've progressed. We've got better, so that's the main thing for me. So yeah now it's about getting them rested, recovering from today. And the focus is firmly on LA Galaxy next Friday night.”

The Indomitable Club will open the 2021 USL Championship regular season on Friday against LA Galaxy II in southern California.

In the 81stminute, Republic FC’s leading scorer from 2020 with eight goals – Dariusz Formella – entered the match for Kharlton Belmar to round out Sacramento’s subs on the afternoon. 

It didn’t take long for Formella to make a positive impact on the match, as the Polish playmaker picked out an open Iwasa towards the far post and for the second time on Saturday, the forward fired home a close-range effort to double the Indomitable Club’s lead.   

The victory was the final match of Republic FC’s preseason schedule and the boys in Old Glory Red certainly went out on a high note. 

“Yeah, I think overall it’s been a good preseason,” Briggs said. “Preseason is a time to obviously get the players fit, get the players sharp, get the players ready. We’re in a decent spot, you’re never where you want to be. I think that’s just a natural as being a coach, you’re never quite where you want to be.”

“But I’m happy with the progress each week. Each week we’ve trained each game we’ve played we’ve progressed. We’ve got better, so that’s the main thing for me. So yeah now it’s about getting them rested, recovering from today. And the focus is firmly on LA Galaxy next Friday night.”

The Indomitable Club will open the 2021 USL Championship regular season on Friday against LA Galaxy II in southern California.
