Ahead of the season, follow along as we profile each positional group for some perspective on the faces taking the pitch in training camp.
Throughout the winter, Republic FC’s technical staff has been hard at work improving the club for 2022. Few positional groups saw more new faces added than the outside defenders, aimed at increasing the club’s chances of scoring from anywhere and frustrating the opposition on defense. Following a preview of the central defenders, take a look at the remaining four players making up Sacramento’s defensive corps.
Duke Lacroix
Upon coming over from Charlotte last season, Lacroix’s impact on the Indomitable City was felt immediately. The New Jersey native became a leader behind the scenes, to where he eventually earned the captain’s armband. On the field, he finished right up there with the team’s statistical leaders in distribution (78%), chances created (26), and interceptions (42). However, despite his individual success, he remains hungry for more, knowing what the whole squad is capable of achieving.
“We’re in a really good spot going into the season I think,” he said. “Obviously individual success is nice, and we want to get those clean sheets and blocked shots, but it comes second to overall success for the team at the end of the day.”
Jack Gurr
Gurr joined Sacramento in December after spending the back half of 2021 in Scotland’s top tier with Aberdeen FC. He adds a dimension that works directly with one of Republic FC’s main goals this season – find a way to threaten on offense from everywhere on the pitch.
He proved he can do just that in his pro debut in 2020, finishing sixth in the entire league in chances created with 36 as a member of Atlanta United FC 2. That kind of production earned him an MLS call-up before he departed for Scotland, and now providing Sacramento with a player who has the potential to blossom into a high-level contributor.
“Jack has shown a real good level of quality advancing with the ball, and has been great on set pieces,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs. “He’s aggressive, constantly communicates and has an excellent right foot.”
Ferrety Sousa
In each of the last two seasons, Sousa has been integral to his club’s success. Both in 2020 and 2021, he reached the League One final with Union Omaha, winning the trophy in 2021. In coming to Sacramento, he’ll be ready to continue the same form that made him one of the Nebraska side’s most valuable.
Thus far in training camp, Sousa’s pace on the wing, and precision both in passing and one-on-one situations has already been noticed. He’ll be able to distribute and impact the game with regularity on both ends. But what may fly under the radar as he comes to the Indomitable city is his leadership – the kind that allowed him to captain his team to a title and should have each one of his teammates rooting for him.
Danny Reynolds
When Republic FC acquired Reynolds, there was no doubt over his potential. The 35th overall pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft by Seattle has performed well in his brief history at the professional level. His debut season – with USL affiliate Tacoma Defiance – saw him log 16 appearances and notch four assists while appearing mainly on the backline. Last season saw him build on it, leading NPSL side Southern States SC in scoring and nabbing a National Team of the Month honor in May.
His biggest attribute is his versatility, which should be a big benefit to him as every player fights for minutes throughout the season. He can line up at left back or in the midfield, or come off the bench like he did in 2020.
